Welcome to FretTrain! I’m Rodney—a pastor, tech professional, and lifelong musician dedicated to serving others. My musical journey began in 1989, but I spent years only knowing the "important" positions on the fretboard. Committing to mastering every note was a turning point that transformed my improvisation and understanding of music. I believe that understanding your instrument's layout is crucial, yet it's often overlooked.
From a Father's Project to a Universal Tool
I originally built FretTrain to help my son memorize his notes, blending my tech background with my love for music. What I discovered, though, was that having a program map out any note, interval, scale, and triad on every string, in any tuning, is an incredibly powerful tool. I’m even using it myself right now to study the Pedal Steel Guitar. It is an incredibly complex instrument to learn—honestly, I’m not sure anyone ever truly masters it!—but FretTrain allows me to visualize how the fretboard changes with different pedal and knee lever combinations before my physical instrument even arrives. Seeing how useful it was for multiple instruments, I knew I had to share it with the world.
